Hamster recovery cage
Recovery cages may be recommended in severe cases to provide a clean, controlled environment & to limit movement after an operation to help prevent infections or wound reopening (e.g. from running around or burrowing). It also allows for close monitoring of any potential symptoms or complications.

For the set-up, a small cage with only the bare minimum is recommended, consisting of:
- Food & water bowl
- Tip: Use a shallow bowl to make it easier for your hamster to reach down to eat/drink while wearing a recovery cone
- Absorbent paper padding
- Used to line the bottom of the cage and absorb urine
- Minimum bedding (optional*)
- Use a few clean, soft tissues ripped into large pieces
- Regular bedding & substrates should not be used as it may irritate the wound (e.g. small pieces, hard textures)
- *In severe cases, bedding is not suggested at all but can help reduce stress
Frequent cleaning of at least twice a day is recommended to prevent infections. This includes cleaning and disinfecting the cage, providing fresh food and water, and changing the padding.
Please note: These guidelines are meant to be a helpful reference only. They are based on the recommendations for Picco following his tumor surgery & amputation, and reflect general practices advised for hamsters at the exotic pet hospital we usually go to. Huge shoutout to Gamma Hospital as always!
